I'm 32 and have been looking forward to fixing...
I'm 32 and have been looking forward to fixing my teeth for more than a decade. As a teen I taught myself to smile with my mouth closed to hide my buck teeth. My bite has always been off, making it difficult to chew at times and leading to jaw pain. My wisdom teeth started coming in a couple of years ago and I could tell my front teeth were becoming more crowded. My top front teeth were being pushed outward, becoming even more crooked, noticeable and uncomfortable.
It became necessary for me to have my wisdom teeth removed, so I decided to take the plunge and have an orthodontic consult, too. I went in expecting to be told that I'd need a full mouth of traditional braces, but was excited to hear that I was an "ideal" candidate for Invisalign. I was a little skeptical, but my Orthodontist came highly recommended so I decided to go for it!
I'm going to try to sum it up quickly with Pros & cons
Pros:
~My teeth are being straightened!! Yay!! So excited!
~Easy to clean teeth & trays. I don't think I would have kept up with the cleaning required of traditional braces
~I can take them out for important social occasions
~I actually look forward to a new set of trays every 2 weeks
~My teeth are white & I feel healthier, thanks to all the brushing and flossing
Cons:
~The only REAL complaint I have is the rough edges of the trays. I think for $6,000 the makers of Invisalign could take the time to smooth the edges of the retainer trays. The roughness causes some VERY painful mouth sores. It's easy enough to file the edges with an emery board, but I never know where the problem spot will be until I develop a sore in my mouth.
~The buttons take some getting used to and I think they are noticeable, BUT I prefer the few buttons I have to a bracket on every tooth with traditional braces.
~I still have a slight lisp. It seems to vary with each tray. I think the trays exaggerate the messed up position on my front teeth, as I had noticed I was developing a lisp before seeking treatment. No one else seems to notice.
~The trays aren't exactly "invisible" when worn. I can't really SEE the trays, but they make my teeth look larger. I am very self conscious of my front teeth though & I think the trays look better now that my teeth have noticeably moved. Still much better than having braces attached to my teeth!
I think Invisalign is totally worth it. I think it's important to go into treatment with a positive attitude and realize that any method you choose to straighten your teeth will cause some discomfort and a not-quite-ideal appearance. That's part of the treatment, but temporary! I'm so excited to see results and can't wait to smile freely, without thinking about how terrible my teeth look!
I'll try to keep this updated and add pictures when I can.
